Video Games Rock

Is Halo 3 the reason why patrons have stayed away from the movie theater this past month?

According to an article published in Advertising Age, that seems to be the sentiment from many film executives who believe that the blockbuster video game Halo 3 has made a huge dent in their pocketbooks.

Movies which premiered around the same time Halo 3 was release such as "Heartbreak Kid", "The Seeker" and "The Kingdom" grossed far less money than analysts and producers expected.

Research firm Media by Numbers says that ticket receipts for the Oct. 5 weekend alone are down by 27%, the worst October performance since 1999.

Things were a lot more rosy for Microsoft. The company reported that Halo 3 grossed over $300 million in sales in its first week with $170 million of that accumulated in its first day.

A few cases have cast doubt into the Halo 3 theory as well "Tyler Perry's Why did I get Married" and "The Game Plan" have broken out at box office successes despite little coverage and small advertising budgets.

Although the theory's validity still must be tested further before we reach a conclusion, it seems that the movie industry and the games industry have become linked together now more than ever before
